Consultant General & Upper GI Surgeon
Mr Lalin Navaratne is a highly skilled Consultant General and Laparoscopic Surgeon currently serving in both military and NHS settings. He practices privately at The Lindo Wing, St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare Private Care. His NHS practice is based at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He is a member of the regular British Armed Forces (Defence Medical Services) holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Mr Navaratne graduated 1st in his class (Broderip and Atchison prize for best overall performance in MBBS examinations) with distinction from the world-renowned University College London (UCL) Medical School, which is consistently ranked within the top 10 best medical schools in the world. Whilst at medical school he undertook an intercalated Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Anatomy, once again graduating top of his class, receiving a First Class honours degree and named on the Dean’s list.
Mr Navaratne completed his postgraduate surgical training in London at various prestigious surgical units including Royal London Hospital (Barts Health NHS Trust), Royal Marsden Hospital (The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust) and St Mary’s Hospital (Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust). Mr Navaratne completed a Major Trauma fellowship at the Level 1 Major Trauma Centre at St Mary’s Hospital. He subsequently undertook travelling fellowships to Kingston, Jamaica for the management of complex abdominal injuries with a focus on gunshot trauma and the David Dunn Fellowship to Hospital San Carlos in Madrid for Upper GI Surgery. Mr Navaratne is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.
Mr Navaratne is an expert in the laparoscopic management of gallstones and its associated complications such as gallstone related pain (biliary colic), gallbladder infection/inflammation (acute cholecystitis), gallstones that have escaped into the common bile duct (common bile duct stones / choledocholithiasis), obstructive jaundice and gallstone pancreatitis. Mr Navaratne performs elective and emergency cholecystectomy (key-hole surgery for gallbladder removal) with or without intra-operative cholangiogram (to ensure the bile duct is clear of stones) and Laparoscopic Common Bile Duct Exploration (LCBDE: key-hole surgery to remove stones from the bile duct). Mr Navaratne’s patient-centred approach to treating gallstone disease is always tailored to his patients needs in order to give them the best possible experience and outcome.
Mr Navaratne has published over 50 peer review papers in high impact medical journals. He has written several book chapters and is the author of the only textbook dedicated to Laparoscopic Common Bile Duct Exploration (LCBDE). He has presented his work at numerous international meetings and has received several awards/prizes for his research including the David Dunn Medal from the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ALSGBI).
Dr James Parry is an accomplished Consultant Anaesthetist with expertise in acute pain management and major abdominal surgery, including major trauma, vascular, and gastrointestinal procedures. He works full time at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and practises privately at The Lindo Wing, St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare Private Care.
Dr Parry graduated with Honours in Medicine (MBChB) from the University of Liverpool, finishing within the top decile of his year. During his undergraduate studies, he distinguished himself academically and clinically, receiving the William James Eastwood Prize for Surgery.
He undertook his postgraduate foundation and core anaesthetic training within the Oxford Deanery, working at leading institutions including the John Radcliffe Hospital, the Churchill Hospital, and the Royal Berkshire Hospital. He went on to complete competitive fellowships in Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine in London before joining the Imperial School of Anaesthesia to complete his specialist training and become a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA). He undertook advanced subspecialty training in Vascular Anaesthesia and Obstetric Anaesthesia.
Dr Parry is recognised for his expertise in ensuring patient safety during major surgery and providing optimal perioperative pain relief. His practice combines acute pain management with perioperative medicine and regional anaesthesia, allowing him to tailor care to each patient and ensure the highest standards of safety and comfort.
He maintains involvement in research in anaesthesia and has presented his work at national meetings, including the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI) and the Obstetric Anaesthetists’ Association (OAA).
